Sorry for the Wednesday post, but sometimes one video is worth sharing (they do affect us in ways just a written argument will not). I tend to largely ignore normal “political process” stuff just because there seems to be little that is particularly admirable in representatives from either party, so why waste my time and brain power with that? However, this is worth sixty seconds of your time. I came across it via Joel Berry of the Babylon Bee, who shared it as “New demonic possession video just dropped”. The woman speaking is Republican representative to the Ohio House of Representatives Jena Powell. The primary man pounding his desk and interrupting her is Democratic representative Michael Skindell. Worth your sixty seconds (with audio):
Two quick comments,
I’m also parroting Joel Berry here, but oh my goodness, can you imagine the spread of this clip if Powell, clearly flustered by the interruption, was a young Democratic woman supporting some good progressive cause, and the man interrupting her was a Republican? Everything we’ve been trying to tell you about the evils of white male privilege and conservative sexism, illustrated in this clip. Nevertheless, she persisted. But oh… she’s a Republican doing bad things and he’s a Democrat. Nothing to learn from this encounter, then.
Remember, as the evangelical elites keep telling me, the two political parties in the US are basically of equal goodness from a Christian perspective. It’s just that one of those parties (or at least some of its representatives) makes, however usually feeble, attempts to stand for basic reality, while representatives from the other howl and pound their arms like possessed people as they do so. But other than that, they’re basically the same, please vote as you’d like.
Per Joel’s comment (sarcastic or not?), we need not go about pinning every evil occurrence on supernatural forces, but from one Roman Catholic priest I chat with from time to time, a couple of days ago:
Sorry? Does Substack have a Tuesday-only posting rule?
I miss your steadier stream at FB.
I read about the video, but seeing it really was worse.
My impression was that Republicans have to stop playing the Dem identity-game,, in this case, filling up their positions with women. It didn't gain them any political advantage for this battle.
It's a one-sided battle and the Rs keep thinking they can win via tactics, politeness, lack of fight (Mitt Romney) and not offending the press.
OT: Do you remember many years ago, the press was known for playing it straight and clergy were known for having a purposefully (biblically) biased view of events and topical issues?
When did they decide to switch roles?
David, have you had a chance to look at this new launch project yet? Might be a good place to submit some of your work, with potential for a wider readership than Substack.
